Why NEWS4NEWBIES?
A 'newbie' [nyoo bee] is someone who is a newcomer or a beginner in a certain field of interest like using the English language. The web has an amazingly rich collection of interesting news and feature stories written in English. Writers of the articles just take it for granted that readers understand them even if they use words not commonly used. In many cases, the articles are just too long that someone who has just started reading news in English would feel overwhelmed. There is a growing number of people from non-English speaking countries who are taking English lessons and use online resources to read and study web news articles with their online teachers. Most of these articles, however, are written for average to excellent English readers-- not beginners. This page was created to offer alternative lesson materials to be used with beginner English learners. Another website has been a great help to me as I started teaching online but I found that as they shortened the news to meet needs of level 1 or 2 students, some of the more important elements of the news are left out, due to limitations in number of words for each level. News4Newbies or N4N is a supplementary section to the main blog page to provide levels 1, 2 and 3 students shorter versions of the ones published on the front page. My motto is "Keep it short but make it interesting and meaningful." |
